Malaysia’s body-brightening market has moved from Google to TikTok Shop — from RM1 glutathione soaps to day-and-night body serums, three-step sets and underarm kits. What sells now, what is rising for 2027, and what a cosmetic may claim and contain.

Key takeaways
- Volume lives on TikTok Shop, not Google. “Body whitening lotion” draws 390 Google searches a month in Malaysia, down 33% year on year, while soaps, serums and sets top TikTok Shop rankings.
- Three formats win: the mini soap bar (traffic), the body serum or serum-lotion (margin) and the three-piece set (order value).
- Active-led body care is replacing generic whitening. “Niacinamide body lotion” +250%, “retinol body lotion” +89% and “glycolic acid underarms” +86% year on year.
- Launches are crowding in. 77% of the 329 active brightening-soap notifications on NPRA’s register carry 2025–2026 numbers, against 57.5% for all cosmetics.
- The rules are tightening. The ASEAN annexes published by NPRA in June 2026 cap kojic acid at 0.2% in body leave-on products, phasing in from April 2028.
What does this report cover?
Body brightening is cosmetic body care that helps skin look more even-toned and radiant through cleansing, exfoliation, hydration and tone-evening actives. We use “brightening” and “even tone” for product language; “whitening” appears only where it is what shoppers type.
Evidence: Google Keyword Planner (Malaysia, 5,820 body-care keywords, average monthly searches July 2025–June 2026); 2,295 Google, Shopee and Amazon suggestions across Malaysia and neighbouring markets (9 October 2026); FastMoss TikTok Shop Malaysia data for June 2026; and active notifications on NPRA’s Quest3+ register, captured 3–5 September 2026. Brands are not named. For background on why brightening care resonates with Malaysian shoppers, see why whitening products are popular in Malaysia.
Which body-brightening products sell in Malaysia now?
| Format | Typical price (MY) | Sales signal | Role in a range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mini soap bar, 10–15 g (glutathione + niacinamide) | RM1–1.60 | Two 10 g glutathione bars ranked 2nd and 4th among TikTok Shop affiliate products (June 2026); two RM1–1.60 mini bars sold about 35,700 and 32,000 units in June | Traffic driver and first order |
| Full brightening soap bar, face and body | RM7–20; premium scrub soap RM34 | 28,000 units in June 2026 for one RM7.79 bar | Repeat purchase |
| Day-and-night body serum duo | About RM14 per serum on promotion | Ranked 7th among TikTok Shop affiliate products (June 2026) | Margin |
| Three-piece set (soap + spray or scrub + cream) | About RM39 | Ranked 8th across all Malaysian beauty by seven-day orders; 326,960 units and RM12.67 million in sales to date (1 October 2026) | Order value and gifting |
| Underarm spray, roll-on or cream | RM6–13 | A 90 ml deodorant spray ranked 10th across Malaysian beauty (1 October 2026) | Add-on and niche entry |
Sources: Involve Asia affiliate ranks (11 June 2026); FindNiche seven-day rankings (1 October 2026); FastMoss monthly units.
The RM1 bar generates volume but little revenue — 35,700 bars at RM1 is roughly RM36,000 a month — while sets and serums carry the margin, so a range needs both. Many mini bars are listed as face soaps; brands use them as the entry product of a face-and-body brightening range. A glutathione soap is a rinse-off cleansing bar that uses glutathione, usually with niacinamide, as its hero ingredient; a body serum is a lighter, more concentrated leave-on than a lotion, applied before or instead of moisturiser.
Which body-care searches are rising?
| Search term (Malaysia) | Average monthly searches | Year-on-year change | Top-of-page bid (high) |
|---|---|---|---|
| skin glutathione | 590 | −46% | RM5.37 |
| antibacterial body wash | 590 | +126% | RM4.53 |
| body whitening lotion | 390 | −33% | RM4.34 |
| underarm whitening | 320 | −33% | RM7.96 |
| benzoyl peroxide body wash | 320 | +321% | RM1.98 |
| glycolic acid underarms | 260 | +86% | RM4.14 |
| retinol body lotion | 140 | +89% | RM2.68 |
| niacinamide body lotion | 90 | +250% | RM2.73 |
| glutathione whitening body lotion | 90 | +1,600% | — |
Generic whitening terms are shrinking while ingredient-named body care grows. Underarm care is the costly click: advertisers bid up to RM7.96 for “underarm whitening”, the highest of any body-care keyword with 200 or more searches a month in our set.
Search suggestions show the shopper’s vocabulary. Across 2,295 suggestions, “glutathione” or “gluta” appeared 355 times, kojic 58, men or lelaki 47, niacinamide 34, SPF 26 and vitamin C 22. Safety words matter too: “KKM”, “NPRA” and “tanpa merkuri” (mercury-free) appeared 18 times. “Halal” appeared in none, so it works as a brand-owner and retailer requirement rather than a consumer headline.
The direction is global. Spate’s 2026 predictions list dark armpits as a growing body-care concern (+21.6% predicted), with serums gaining as body care adopts skincare formats. In China, online body-care sales rose 65.6% in 2025, according to third-party data reported by TMTPost.
What can a body-brightening cosmetic claim and contain in Malaysia?
| Topic | Malaysian and ASEAN rule | What it means for a brand |
|---|---|---|
| Mercury, hydroquinone, tretinoin | Listed in Annex II: must not be in cosmetics | NPRA cancels notifications of cosmetics found with them |
| Kojic acid | Annex III (release 2026-1): 1.0% in face, neck, hand and rinse-off products; 0.2% in body leave-on products; phasing in from April 2028 | Formulate body lotions and serums at or below 0.2% now |
| Tranexamic acid | Annex III: skin products up to 3.0% | Usable in underarm and body serums within the limit |
| Glycolic and lactic acid (AHA) | Annex III: up to 10% for general use, final pH 3.5 or above; sun-sensitivity warning at 2.5% and above, except with sunscreen or on non-sun-exposed areas | Check pH and label wording for every acid product |
| Claims | Guideline for Cosmetic Claims: “prevent or reduce dark spots and pigmentation” acceptable; “inhibition of melanin synthesis” and treating melasma not acceptable | Write “brightens”, “evens skin tone”, “reduces the look of dark underarms” |
| Product names | “Skin Bleach” is a non-permissible cosmetic name | Use “Glow”, “Bright” or “Cerah” names |
NPRA classes products containing hydroquinone or tretinoin as pharmaceuticals requiring Drug Control Authority registration and cancels cosmetic notifications when such scheduled poisons are found (NPRA press statement). The World Health Organization notes that mercury-containing skin lighteners are hazardous and banned in many countries. That is why shoppers type “tanpa merkuri” and “KKM”: a notified product from a certified factory is part of the sale.

| Day-and-night body serum duo | 2 x 120 ml pump | RM29–49 per set | Day: niacinamide, vitamin C derivative. Night: lactic or glycolic acid, ceramide | Serum duo ranks 7th; niacinamide body lotion +250% |
| Glutathione serum-lotion | 300 ml pump + 60 ml trial | RM29–45 | Glutathione, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid; optional SPF version | “glutathione whitening body lotion” +1,600% from a small base |

| Three-step brightening body set | 90 g soap + 200 g scrub + 250 ml lotion, gift box | RM39–59 | Glutathione soap, rice or tamarind scrub, glutathione-niacinamide lotion | A three-piece set ranks 8th across Malaysian beauty; gifting |
An SPF version needs SPF testing before any sun-protection claim. For mini-format strategy and affiliate-ready packs, see our TikTok viral private label catalogue.

ORIZI perspective: what the register says about 2027
In ORIZI’s October 2026 scoring of 32 beauty and wellness sub-categories, body brightening ranked second with 85 out of 100, behind perfume. It scored full marks on platform sales and manufacturing fit, and lower on competition — the register shows why. Active notifications with “gluta” in the product name total 438, and 71% carry 2025–2026 numbers; brightening soaps are at 77% and underarm products at 73%, all well above the 57.5% average for cosmetics.
Many top-ranked TikTok Shop brightening listings are made outside Malaysia and notified by local holders, according to NPRA’s register. For brand owners in that position, a Malaysian JAKIM-certified facility removes import lead time from restocks. Dr Orizi (M) Sdn. Bhd. is already the listed manufacturer on brightening and glutathione soap bars, a glutathione lotion and body scrubs for client brands, produced under NPRA cosmetic GMP (since 2024) and ISO 22716 (since 2022), with JAKIM Halal since 2015. These register counts reflect product names and launches, not sales.
Risks, limitations and common mistakes
- Fast-result promises. “Instant” and “7 days” are common shopper words, but treatment-style claims and “bleach” names take a product out of cosmetics.
- Living on the RM1 bar. Mini bars are a loss-leader; plan the set or serum that carries the margin from day one.
- Formulating to yesterday’s limits. Kojic acid body products launched now will meet the 0.2% cap; set acid pH and labels to Annex III.
- Data limits. FastMoss and FindNiche figures are third-party estimates; Keyword Planner under-measures Malay and Chinese demand; suggestion counts are not volumes. Refresh after three months.
FAQ
What does a brightening soap do?
A brightening soap cleanses while delivering tone-evening ingredients such as glutathione, niacinamide or kojic acid. As a rinse-off cosmetic, it pairs with a leave-on serum or lotion for a brighter, more even look.
What is a body serum, and is it the same as body lotion?
No. A body serum is lighter and more concentrated in actives, while a body lotion focuses on moisture. A day-and-night body serum duo ranked seventh among TikTok Shop affiliate products in Malaysia in June 2026.
Is it possible to lighten dark underarms with a cosmetic?
Cosmetics can help reduce the look of dark underarms with gentle lactic or glycolic acid exfoliation, niacinamide and tranexamic acid within ASEAN limits. NPRA accepts “reduce dark spots and pigmentation” wording; treatment claims are not cosmetic.
Is kojic acid allowed in body lotion in Malaysia?
Yes, within limits. The ASEAN annexes published by NPRA in June 2026 set a maximum of 0.2% kojic acid in body leave-on products and 1.0% in face, neck, hand and rinse-off products, phasing in from April 2028.
How can I tell if a brightening cream is safe?
Check that it carries an NPRA notification number and look it up on NPRA’s Quest3+ product search. Mercury, hydroquinone and tretinoin must not be present in any cosmetic sold in Malaysia.
