Why Halal matters for your brand

Malaysia has one of the world’s most established Halal ecosystems, and Malaysian consumers — roughly two in three of the population — actively look for the JAKIM Halal mark. For many buyers it is not a nice-to-have; it is the deciding factor at the shelf and a condition for listing on major retail and e-commerce platforms.

The bigger opportunity is export. Because JAKIM Halal is widely trusted, a Halal-certified Malaysian product carries credibility into the large Muslim-majority markets of Indonesia and the Gulf, and into ASEAN generally. Building Halal in at the manufacturing stage — rather than trying to add it after launch — keeps those markets open from day one.

What Halal certification actually covers

Halal certification is often assumed to be only about ingredients. In Malaysia it is far broader. Malaysian Halal certification, issued by JAKIM, covers ingredients, processing aids, equipment, cleaning, storage and the entire production chain — not merely the recipe. A product is Halal only if every stage that touches it is compliant.

Two Malaysian standards apply to the categories ORIZI manufactures:

A product that merely avoids obvious non-Halal ingredients is not automatically Halal-certified. Certification requires an audited facility, approved ingredients with supporting documentation, and a controlled, traceable process — verified by JAKIM.

Recognised for export: JAKIM’s global standing

One reason to certify in Malaysia rather than only locally is international acceptance. JAKIM operates a formal recognition scheme for foreign Halal certification bodies, and as at January 2026 it recognises 94 foreign Halal certification bodies across dozens of countries. That mutual recognition is what lets a JAKIM-linked Halal product travel — it is understood and trusted by authorities and buyers well beyond Malaysia.

For an exporter, this means a Malaysian-made Halal product is a credible starting point for Indonesia (which operates its own mandatory Halal regime), the Gulf states, and other Muslim-majority markets, subject to each market’s own import and registration rules.

MUI & BPJPH: Halal certification for export to Indonesia

Indonesia is the world’s largest Muslim-majority market, with more than 230 million Muslims — and under its Halal Product Assurance Law, Halal certification is mandatory for a growing list of product categories sold there. Indonesian Halal is administered by BPJPH (Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal, the government Halal agency), with the Halal ruling issued by MUI (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, the Indonesian Ulema Council). Many brand owners and buyers still refer to this simply as “MUI Halal.”

For an OEM customer this is a distinct requirement: a Malaysian JAKIM certificate alone does not automatically make a product saleable in Indonesia — the product generally needs Indonesian Halal recognition as well. BPJPH operates mutual-recognition arrangements with foreign Halal bodies, including Malaysia’s JAKIM, which eases the path, but the Indonesian step remains its own process.

Because a large share of ORIZI Group’s customers export to Indonesia, ORIZI Group has also applied for MUI / Indonesian (BPJPH) Halal certification — not only JAKIM. For your brand this means Halal is treated as a genuine, multi-jurisdiction capability rather than a single Malaysian certificate: if your target market includes Indonesia, that requirement is understood and planned for from the start.

How the Halal manufacturing process works

1. Brief & market — define the product, target Muslim market(s) and whether Halal is for Malaysia only or export.
2. Formula & ingredient screen — select ingredients that are Halal-permitted and supported by supplier documentation.
3. Facility match — assign the project to the ORIZI company whose Halal certification covers your category.
4. Sampling & testing — approve prototypes and complete stability, safety and compliance work.
5. Certification & notification — ensure the finished product is covered by Halal certification and, for cosmetics, notified with the NPRA.
6. Production & launch — manufacture under the certified, audited process and prepare Halal-appropriate labelling.

Cosmetic Halal vs food Halal — know which applies

The two standards are not interchangeable. A Halal cosmetic (MS 2634) and a Halal supplement or food (MS 1500) are audited against different requirements, and a certificate for one does not automatically cover the other. Confirming the correct standard early prevents delays — and is exactly the kind of detail the assigned ORIZI company handles as part of the project.
