How to Get Halal Certification in Malaysia (JAKIM)
A brand owner’s guide to JAKIM Halal certification — the application steps, what’s required, how long it takes — and why manufacturing with an already-certified OEM can mean you don’t have to apply yourself.
Direct answer
Halal certification in Malaysia is applied for through JAKIM’s online MYeHALAL system: you register the company, submit the application with ingredient and process documentation, put a Halal Assurance System and internal Halal committee in place, pass a facility audit, and receive the certificate once the Halal ruling is confirmed. The process typically takes a few months and requires a compliant manufacturing site. Brand owners who manufacture with an already Halal-certified OEM — such as ORIZI Group’s four certified companies — generally do not need to run their own certification; the product is made under the manufacturer’s existing certification.
Who this guide is for
- A brand owner who wants a Halal product but is unsure whether they or the manufacturer applies
- A company weighing up applying for JAKIM Halal directly vs using a certified OEM
- Anyone researching the JAKIM Halal application process, requirements or timeline
Who actually holds the Halal certificate — you or the factory?
This is the most common point of confusion, so it is worth settling first. In an OEM arrangement, the Halal certificate belongs to the manufacturing facility, not automatically to the brand. If you manufacture in a factory that already holds JAKIM Halal certification for your product category, your product is produced under that certification — you usually do not need to run a separate application yourself.
That is a major reason brands choose a certified OEM. ORIZI Group holds Malaysian Halal certification across four companies (Dr Orizi (M) Sdn. Bhd., D&O Nutraceutical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd., Nutrizens Wellness Sdn. Bhd. and Skyler Medical Manufacturing Sdn. Bhd.), so a brand can launch a Halal product without first building and certifying its own facility. The JAKIM Halal application process, step by step
If a company does apply for its own certification (for example, a factory owner rather than a brand using an OEM), the Malaysian process runs broadly as follows:
- Register on MYeHALAL — create the company account on JAKIM’s online Halal system.
- Prepare the Halal Assurance System (HAS) — appoint an internal Halal committee and document how Halal integrity is controlled across purchasing, production, storage and cleaning.
- Submit the application — select the correct scheme (e.g. cosmetics or food), list products, and upload ingredient specifications, supplier Halal statuses and process details.
- Document verification — JAKIM reviews the submission and may request clarification or additional documents.
- Facility audit — an audit of the premises, equipment, storage, cleaning and records against the applicable standard.
- Halal ruling & approval — the findings and product status are confirmed.
- Certificate issued — the Halal certificate is granted for the approved products and scope, and must be maintained (renewals and continued compliance).
JAKIM’s exact procedures, schemes and fees are published on the official Halal portal and change from time to time. Confirm the current requirements before applying.
What you need before you can be certified
| Requirement | What it means |
|---|---|
| Halal-permitted ingredients | Every raw material and processing aid must be Halal-acceptable and documented, with supplier evidence. |
| Compliant facility | Premises, equipment, storage and cleaning that meet the applicable standard (MS 2634 cosmetics or MS 1500 food). |
| Halal Assurance System | An internal committee and documented controls that keep the product Halal at every stage. |
| Traceability & records | Documentation that lets an auditor trace ingredients and processes end to end. |
| No cross-contamination | Separation from non-Halal materials across the whole production chain. |
How long does JAKIM Halal certification take?
There is no single fixed figure — it depends on how complete the application is, the number of products and ingredients, supplier documentation, and audit scheduling. As a planning guide it commonly takes a few months from a complete submission to certificate. Incomplete ingredient documentation is the most frequent cause of delay.
Using an already-certified OEM removes most of this lead time for the brand, because the facility, system and audits are already in place — the focus shifts to confirming that your specific product and ingredients fit the existing certified scope.
Applying yourself vs using a certified OEM
| Apply yourself | Use a certified OEM (e.g. ORIZI) | |
|---|---|---|
| Facility | You must have a compliant, certifiable site | Already certified |
| Time to market | Longer — build system, audit, certify | Faster — product fits existing scope |
| Upfront effort | High (HAS, documentation, audit) | Low — handled by the manufacturer |
| Best for | Companies running their own factory | Brand owners and distributors |
Questions about getting Halal certified
Do I need my own Halal certificate if I use an OEM?
Usually no. The Halal certificate belongs to the manufacturing facility. If your OEM already holds JAKIM Halal for your product category, your product is made under that certification and you generally do not apply separately.
How do I apply for JAKIM Halal certification?
Applications are made through JAKIM’s online MYeHALAL system: register the company, put a Halal Assurance System in place, submit the application with ingredient and process documentation, pass a facility audit, and receive the certificate once approved.
How long does it take to get Halal certified in Malaysia?
Typically a few months from a complete application, depending on product count, ingredient documentation and audit scheduling. Incomplete ingredient paperwork is the most common delay. Using a certified OEM removes most of this lead time.
What are the main requirements for Halal certification?
Halal-permitted, documented ingredients; a compliant facility; a Halal Assurance System with an internal committee; traceability and records; and no cross-contamination with non-Halal materials.
Is Halal certification a one-time thing?
No. It covers a defined scope of products and must be maintained through continued compliance and renewal. Adding new products or ingredients may require updating the certification.
