OEM Manufacturing for Licensed & Character Brands

For licensees, retailers and brand owners running character or entertainment-IP products: what a Disney FAMA is, why IP owners audit the factory before they approve it, and how ORIZI Group’s Disney FAMA-authorised cosmetics facility in Malaysia takes that hurdle off your critical path.

Direct answer

ORIZI Group manufactures cosmetics and personal-care products for licensed and character brands. Its cosmetics plant, Dr Orizi (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Ipoh, Perak, is a Disney FAMA-authorised facility: it has passed The Walt Disney Company’s International Labor Standards (ILS) audit and is authorised to manufacture products bearing Disney-owned intellectual property — including Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars — under a licensee’s agreement with Disney. The same audit-ready facility, GMP systems and artwork-controlled workflow serve licensees of other character and entertainment brands.

Who this page is for

  • A licensee holding a character or entertainment licence (Disney, Marvel, Pixar, Star Wars or another IP owner) who needs an approved factory in Southeast Asia
  • A retailer, pharmacy chain or FMCG brand planning a character collaboration or limited edition
  • A toy, gift, stationery or promotional-merchandise company extending a licensed range into bath, body or beauty
  • A regional distributor that must show the IP owner a compliant manufacturing partner before the programme is approved
  • A brand owner who has read about character-inspired products and wants to do it the licensed, legal way

What is a Disney FAMA?

A Disney FAMA (Facility and Merchandise Authorization) is the document The Walt Disney Company issues to confirm that a specific factory has met Disney’s compliance standards and is authorised to manufacture products bearing Disney-owned intellectual property for a named licensee. Disney is one of the world’s largest licensors of consumer products, and every facility that makes Disney-branded goods must be authorised before production begins.

The authorisation follows Disney’s International Labor Standards (ILS) programme, which audits the factory against a Code of Conduct for Manufacturers covering child labour, forced labour, working hours, wages, health and safety, freedom of association and related workplace standards. A FAMA is therefore a statement about the factory — how it treats its people and how it is run — not a licence to use the characters. The full explanation, including how it fits with Malaysian NPRA rules, is in our guide what Disney FAMA means for licensed beauty products made in Malaysia.

Disney FAMA authorisation is held by Dr Orizi (M) Sdn. Bhd., the ORIZI Group company that manufactures cosmetics and personal care. It applies to that facility, and it is granted under a licensee’s agreement with Disney. ORIZI Group does not own or license any Disney, Marvel, Pixar or Star Wars intellectual property. See how each ORIZI Group company’s credentials are held on the certifications by company page.

Why IP owners audit the factory before they approve a product

A character brand’s value rests on trust with families, so the IP owner carries the reputational risk of every factory in the chain. That is why the licence agreement typically requires the licensee to disclose each manufacturing site and obtain the IP owner’s approval — usually after a social-compliance audit — before the first unit is made. For a licensee, a factory that has not yet been approved is the single most common reason a launch date slips.

Working with a facility that is already authorised removes that step from the critical path. The audit has been done, the record is on file, and the programme can move straight to product development and artwork approval.

Products commonly made under a character licence

In cosmetics and personal care, character licences most often appear on products bought for children and families or as limited-edition collaborations. Formats ORIZI Group manufactures for this segment include:

  • Bath and body for kids and families — bubble bath, body wash, shampoo and conditioner, bath bombs, body lotion
  • Hand hygiene — hand wash, hand sanitiser gel and spray, hand cream
  • Lip and face — lip balm and tinted balm, sheet masks, face mist, sunscreen
  • Fragrance — body mist and eau de toilette for collaborations and gift sets
  • Colour cosmetics collaborations — limited-edition palettes, lip tints and nail colour developed with the licensee’s artwork

Each of these is a cosmetic product in Malaysia and must be notified with the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) before it is sold. Children’s products carry additional ingredient and claim considerations, which ORIZI Group’s regulatory team builds into the formulation brief from day one. Formats are manufactured by the relevant ORIZI Group company; cosmetics and personal care are made by Dr Orizi (M) Sdn. Bhd.

How a licensed programme runs at ORIZI Group

  1. Licence and scope check — the licensee confirms the licensed property, product categories, territories and channels covered by its agreement.
  2. Facility authorisation — for a Disney programme, the licensee files its FAMA application naming the Dr Orizi facility; ORIZI Group supplies the facility details and supporting documents. For other IP owners, the same audit records and certificates are provided for their approval process.
  3. Product and packaging development — formulation, packaging and costing are developed to the brief, with children’s-product and target-market requirements built in.
  4. Artwork approval — packaging artwork is routed through the licensee to the IP owner for approval; production does not start until approved artwork is on file.
  5. Regulatory notification — NPRA cosmetic notification in Malaysia and support for destination-market requirements.
  6. Production, QC and release — GMP manufacturing with lot-level traceability and finished-goods QC.
  7. Shipping and export documents — documentation prepared for customs, including the FAMA where applicable.

What ORIZI Group does not do

ORIZI Group does not license characters, does not sell character-branded products of its own, and does not use any IP owner’s characters, logos or names outside a licensee’s approved job. The licence, the artwork and the approvals belong to the licensee. That separation is what protects the licensee, the IP owner and the factory, and it is the reason a “character-inspired” product made without a licence is not something ORIZI Group will manufacture. Read more in how to put character artwork on packaging legally and why licensed products need stronger factory compliance.

Based on ORIZI Group’s manufacturing experience

Two things decide whether a licensed launch lands on time. The first is factory approval: the IP owner’s audit is the step licensees most often underestimate, and it is the one that is already complete at Dr Orizi. The second is artwork approval: a packaging proof that changes after the licensee has submitted it to the IP owner restarts the clock, so ORIZI Group freezes structural packaging and dielines before artwork is submitted, not after. Licensees who plan those two gates first tend to keep the rest of the programme — formulation, testing, NPRA notification and production — inside a normal development timeline.

A Disney FAMA is licensee-specific and time-limited, and Disney can revoke it. Authorisation for a new licensee, or for a new programme, is always subject to Disney’s review. Confirm the current status for your project before committing launch dates.

Questions about licensed and character brand manufacturing

Can a Malaysian OEM factory manufacture Disney, Marvel, Pixar or Star Wars licensed products?

Yes, if the factory has been authorised by Disney for that licensee. ORIZI Group’s cosmetics plant, Dr Orizi (M) Sdn. Bhd. in Ipoh, Perak, is a Disney FAMA-authorised facility, which means it has passed Disney’s International Labor Standards (ILS) audit and is approved to manufacture Disney-branded products (including Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars) under a licensee’s agreement with Disney.

It is issued after the factory passes Disney’s International Labor Standards (ILS) audit, and it can be presented to customs authorities when licensed goods are imported or exported.

Does a FAMA mean the factory can put Disney characters on my product?

No. A FAMA authorises the factory; the right to use the characters belongs to the licensee under its licence agreement with Disney. Artwork, product categories, territories and approvals are all governed by that licence. ORIZI Group manufactures to the licensee’s approved artwork and does not use Disney characters, logos or names on its own account.

I hold a licence for a different character or brand. Does the Disney FAMA still help?

Yes, in two ways. First, most IP owners run a similar social-compliance audit before approving a factory, and a facility that has already passed Disney’s ILS audit, holds Sedex membership with a SMETA audit and operates under cosmetic GMP is well prepared for that review. Second, the same documentation, artwork-approval workflow and traceability systems apply to any licensed programme, whichever brand owns the characters.

Which products are usually made under a character licence in cosmetics and personal care?

Bath and body products for children and families (bubble bath, body wash, shampoo, bath bombs), hand wash and hand sanitiser, lip balm and tinted balm, hand cream and body lotion, sheet masks, sunscreen, fragrance mists, and limited-edition colour-cosmetics collaborations. In Malaysia these are cosmetic products, notified with NPRA before sale; children’s products also carry stricter ingredient and claim considerations.

How does a new licensee get ORIZI Group’s factory authorised for its own Disney programme?

A Disney FAMA is issued per licensee and is not transferable between licensees, so each licensee files its own FAMA application naming the Dr Orizi facility. Because the facility’s ILS audit record is already on Disney’s file, that step is normally far quicker than a first-time audit, subject to Disney’s review. ORIZI Group provides the facility details and supporting documents the licensee needs.
